The Defence Forces can confirm that the remains of Private Sean Rooney arrived from Beirut Airport to Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co. Dublin this morning at approx. 08.30 am.

The Defence Forces can confirm the details of the repatriation of Private Seán Rooney from Lebanon to Ireland. Private Seán Rooney's remains will be brought home on Sunday 18 December by the Irish Air Corps CASA aircraft, departing Beirut at 1600 hrs (local Beirut time). [Click for media details]

To the Mr and Mrs Rooney and their beloved family, rest assured I have every confidence the army, the state and our press will stop at nothing to bring these bastards to justice; we did it before; if it takes another 30 years, we will hunt these thugs down and send a message to combatants and militias in peacekeeping areas, that we (Irish) are not easy targets that we will hunt you and find you and you will be brought to justice. I hope that sean's sacrifice will bring more cooperation between UNIFIL and Hezbollah moving forward; we have to hope; god knows the effort will have been paid for with precious blood. My heart goes out to you, one day at a time, and we learn to nestle pain deep down in our bones, but to live and live on and find joy in life once again, it will come for ye too.........regards, paddy lyons

I never met Private Rooney, but as the daughter of an Air Corps officer who served overseas with MINURSO in the Western Sahara, my heart and soul are with Private Rooney's family, friends and comrades today. This loss is being felt countrywide by many people who never had the privilege of meeting him, but who feel pride in, and gratitude to, our military personnel who chose to serve and keep peace beyond our borders.
