The Defence Forces can confirm that the remains of Private Sean Rooney arrived from Beirut Airport to Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co. Dublin this morning at approx. 08.30 am.

The Defence Forces can confirm the details of the repatriation of Private Seán Rooney from Lebanon to Ireland. Private Seán Rooney's remains will be brought home on Sunday 18 December by the Irish Air Corps CASA aircraft, departing Beirut at 1600 hrs (local Beirut time). [Click for media details]

On behalf of the members of the Multinational Force and Observers, I wish to offer our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences at the tragic loss of a brave soldier of peace, Private Sean Rooney. Peacekeeping is an honourable undertaking but is not one void of risks. The cost of peace is often high however it is often necessary for the greater good. It doesn't make the loss any easier to fathom, especially when it occurs in such tragic circumstances. Our thoughts are with Sean's fiance and family, as well as his comrades in arms. Sean, I never got to meet you in person, but knowing your mam and growing up with your late father Cormac, I had the privilege of seeing you go from a boy to a man throughout the years via your mam’s Facebook photos. She loved you very much. And I know how proud Cormac would have been of you to serve your country with such great honour and distinction. I know in my heart that the two of you are together again in heaven and that Natasha and your family’s pain will be eased even just a little, knowing that. Rest in peace, Sean.
