The Defence Forces can confirm that the remains of Private Sean Rooney arrived from Beirut Airport to Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co. Dublin this morning at approx. 08.30 am.

The Defence Forces can confirm the details of the repatriation of Private Seán Rooney from Lebanon to Ireland. Private Seán Rooney's remains will be brought home on Sunday 18 December by the Irish Air Corps CASA aircraft, departing Beirut at 1600 hrs (local Beirut time). [Click for media details]

The memories of my time in the DF and in Lebanon especially, were awakened when I read of the death of Pte. Rooney. I was 20 when I deployed to UNIFIL. I know now, how much of life was ahead of me, in real terms. I wish he had gotten to fulfil his full potential, to have had the opportunities I have had, and to see what I have seen. I feel his loss personally, though I never knew him. My sincere condolences to all his family, friend and colleagues. There are so many like me out there, who feel this loss, deeply and personally.
