Mission
The Mission of the Communications and Information Services (CIS) School is to provide training in the operation and maintenance of communications equipment used by the Defence Forces.
The Communications and Information Services School conducts training in the following areas:
- Trainee Technicians
- Regimental Signallers
- Electronic Engineering Technicians
- Radio Instructors
- Telephone Maintenance
- Data Communications
- Microwave Systems
- Network Administration
- Communications and Information Services officers career courses
Strategic Vision
The CIS Corps must be a dynamic learning organisation, which reflects continuous improvements in operational capabilities, to enable continued success in the accomplishment of our Mission. The strategic goals from a CIS training and educational perspective would be to:
Maintain and develop Communications and Information Services training on an annual basis as per the Defence Force Annual Training Directive.
Provide training as laid down by the Director of the CIS Corps.
Ensure that CIS Corps training standards are adhered to effectively.
Continually evaluate and test CIS Field Unit deployable operational capabilities.
Review and enhance all CIS training syllabi in order to encompass new technology and improve student proficiency.
Assist in the research and development of new equipment in respect of procedural operation.
Develop and enhance collaboration with external educational institutes.
Core Services
The CIS School has a subunit structure of 3 sections. These sections provide training in the areas of operational procedures, technical proficiency and simulation. The sections are as follows;
Procedural and Operations Section - The primary function of the Proc/Ops section is to train DF personnel in CIS procedures and operational matters. The courses offered are:
- Communications Operative Course
- Detachment Commanders Course
- Aerial Riggers Course
- Regimental Signals Course
- CIS Standard NCO Course
- CIS Young Officers Course
The Communications Operative Course is the foundation level course of training in the CIS Corps. It provides the learner with the necessary skills and competencies to operate and deploy CIS assets in a tactical environment. This involves learning aspects in military voice procedure and military radio operation. It also teaches the learner how to install, terminate and maintain a line network in fixed barrack environments and remote sites.
Technical Section — The section’s role is to impart technical knowledge to trainees on the various CIS technical disciplines. The technical training carried out is as follows:
- CIS Trainee Technician Scheme (TTS)
- Technical Training Advancement Courses
- Strategic Applications Training
The core technical course in the CIS School is to qualify and grade DF personnel as CIS Corps technicians. The purpose of the CIS Trainee Technician Scheme (TTS) is to provide technicians for the CIS Corps. The scheme offers successful candidates the opportunity of becoming an efficient and disciplined member of the CIS Corps as well as the opportunity to become technically skilled in the areas of electronics, telecommunications and computer technology. The system of training is of the highest standard and ensures the attainment of the highest qualifications. The Trainee Technician Scheme in the CIS School is run in conjunction with the Institute of Technology Carlow and allows trainees to achieve a 3rd Level Ordinary Degree, Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Engineering (Military Communications Systems) Level 7 HETAC Award.
