Our thoughts are with the injured parties, their comrades and their families.

The casualties were triaged, stabilised and treated by Irish Defence Forces medical personnel in the Irish Camp UNP 2-45.

The Irish coordinated the evacuation of one patient by helicopter to Beirut. The remaining three patients were transported by the 123rd Infantry Battalion using the Irish armoured ambulance and armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to a hospital in the city of Tyre.

There are currently 333 Irish soldiers serving in UNIFIL with the 123rd Infantry Battalion and 12 serving in UNTSO.

Statement by UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti

This morning, three OGL (UNTSO) military observers and one Lebanese language assistant on a foot patrol along the Blue Line were injured when an explosion occurred near their location. They have now been evacuated for medical treatment. OGL (UNTSO) observers support UNIFIL in implementing our mandate. We are investigating the origin of the explosion. Safety and security of UN personnel must be guaranteed. All actors have a responsibility under international humanitarian law to ensure protection to non-combatants, including peacekeepers, journalists, medical personnel, and civilians.
