Óglaigh na hÉireann Visit FAI HQ Prior To Competing In 7th CISM World Military Games In China.

Today at FAI HQ in Abbottstown, competitors from Óglaigh na hÉireann travelling to the 7th CISM Military World Games 2019 received best wishes and advice from the Republic of Ireland Senior Manager, Mick McCarthy. Also in attendance to bid farewell and good luck were Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr Paul Kehoe TD, President of the FAI, Mr Donal Conway and Assistant Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Brigadier General Peter O’Halloran.

Óglaigh na hÉireann will send a team of 49 personnel comprising of athletes, coaches, officials, medical personnel and support staff to compete in Wuhan, China from the 15th to 29th October 2019. They will be competing in three disciplines which are soccer, boxing and shooting, for which they have trained thoroughly and extensively in the preceding months.

Speaking at the conference Minister Kehoe stated, ”The fact we are sending athletes who have excelled in not just one but three sports is a testament to the Defence Forces. These personnel are representing their country on the world stage and can be rightly proud. I want to commend and thank the FAI for the tremendous support they have shown the Defence Forces in recent times.”

Ireland has previously participated in the CISM World Games, last time being Rio in 2011. In the history of the CISM World Games Ireland have won six (6) medals; one(1) Gold, two (2) Silver and three (3) Bronze medals in previous games.

The training and preparation for participation in the CISM World Games has allowed the Defence Forces to enhance relationships with strategic partners such as the Sports Institute of Ireland, FAI, AIBA and CISM. This positive collaboration facilitates the growth and popularity of sports and fitness within the organisation.
